Sustainable lingerie from Switzerland. Best ethical lingerie brand from Switzerland

Thoughts of September: ethical lingerie brand from Switzerland

In line with our review of fast fashion, I absolutely want to be 100% transparent with you guys. I want to support some sustainable and ethical brands in clothing, jewellery and lingerie. The goal is to show you that those brands are not only fully conscious of the impact but also look/are luxurious and chic.

Being sustainable about your clothes does not mean looking hippie or like an old woman. Nowadays, new brands are emerging with absolutely beautiful, luxurious/chic and classy designs.

This is, in the research of new lingerie brands, that we found Thoughts-of-September: a sustainable lingerie brand created by Zippora.

This label is not only producing responsible, sustainable products but also is promoting self-love and body positivity.

I would like to thank its owner Zippora for her interview:

Tell us a little bit more about yourself?

My name is Zippora. I use to work for a midsize sports brand a couple of years ago. In the meantime, I was more and more thinking about the fashion industry today and its downsides… I felt like I could not be a part of this business anymore, which is abusive of our planet and people.

I started Thoughts of September six months after leaving my job. I just wanted to be part of a solution for a better future and create sustainable, beautiful and comfortable lingerie for every body type.

Why did you begin your boutique?

I have personally boycotted fast fashion since 2015. FOr almost everything it was quite easy to find a sustainable, fair and also beautiful solution but I had a hard time to find a pretty, comfy and sustainable lingerie in good quality.

Sustainable underwears mostly are or very very basic or if not they are scratchy (or even grandma’s style).

Actually, it was a very pragmatic decision which I fell in love with more and more.

We can see that today the fashion industry got crazy due to the profit and competition, do you believe that business and sustainability can work together?

Sure I do believe so but we all need to have fair prices. With fair, I mean fair for the prices and the people. We need to produce (and buy) a lot less but in much higher quality, using durable and sustainable materials.

Why is your brand considered as sustainable?

Well, we produce everything as local as possible. So far 70% of the collection is sewn by me, 10% by a friend here in Lucerne and 20% by a small family driven factory in Lugano. We are always trying to find the best solutions in terms of sustainability, using recycled yarns, natural fibres and short distances travel. All our material comes from Europe, the lace, for example, comes from Milano and the jersey from Portugal. We always aim to find a sustainable solution for the people we work with and for the planet.

Your product is not as cheap as you can find in fast fashion. This is mainly due to the fast fashion industry paying such a low salary to workers. Can you explain this cost?

We have a much lower margin as most of the brands out there. I don`t think our products are expensive if you consider our small volume, the sustainable materials, the durability and the fact that it is all handmade in Switzerland. Approximately 35% (fast fashion less than 3%!!!) of the price is production, 15% (fast fashion: 12%) materials and the rest goes for the website, shipping, taxes, rent…

Are you delivering worldwide?

No, only Europe, but mainly Switzerland – we`re a local brand.

What is the expectation for the next 5 years?

Thoughts of September was a spontaneous idea in September 2018. I have made some samples end of the same month. Then we had a photo shooting beginning of November, started our crowdfunding campaign mid of December and celebrated our launch mid of march 2019 – this whole process took us only 6 months while it takes for most of the people around 2 years to write a business plan. I am a “just do it” girl and so I take day by day, try to do my best and wonder about the things to come and if I only had the chance to know where I am in 5 years, I would be scared anyways.

Again thank you so much for the interview! And click here for the link to their homepage.

What we love: a lady boss! She is not scared of everything and wants to share her value through her work. Body positivity, sexy lingerie and care about the environment what is not to like !!
