With global warming and the outbreak of new measure to save the planet, scientist try to find new ways to recycle or create products. Bags, belt and other accessories that formerly would be made from leather are nowadays less popular as people realise the impact it has on animals. In this article we will talk about a new type of leather made fully out of fruit leaves: Piñatex.
What is Piñatex?
When pineapples are harvested, the pineapple plant is wasted and most of the time burned. Instead, the company Ananas Aman decided to transform this waste into something useful and this how they created Piñatex: a vegan pineapple leather able to replace mass-produced leather and synthetic material. It was developed by Dr Carmen Hijosa.
What we love about this company?
Well, to be honest, what is not to love. They use a circular economy, they work with communities in the Philippines, they do no use chemicals and they use the waste of pineapple harvest.

If you want to create a bag brand or accessories such as belts or other leather goods: you should look into Piñatex: they are the future. They are B corporation certified. Hence, using their material will give your brand a more friendly, sustainable, luxury feel to it.
After a review of the fabric, we found out it is finished with petroleum which as an environmental impact. Obviously the impact is lower than real leather but it is still important to know.
