How to make the perfect recipe and reduce food waste?

How to make the perfect recipe with scraps and reduce food waste?

It is Sunday and my motivation to do my weekly groceries is nowhere to be found. I, with all of my strength, go check my fridge to see if going outside is necessary. It is sad. I have some vegetables fitting together, some rests of the week. Nothing looks like it could do a nice recipe. But I have more willingness to find some dish that I can do with what I currently have instead of having to do groceries or waste food.

Food loss represents 8% of the global greenhouse gas emissions.

Did you know that, in 2017, an area which is greater than Canada and India together and is used to grow food that is never eaten?

Supercook:

If only there was such a beautiful thing that is the internet. The internet presents you: Supercook. It is a really interesting website. Everything that you still have in your fridge or pantry can be added and they pull out all the recipes you could do with what you have. This is an amazing idea. It is not only going to help you reduce your food waste, but the satisfaction you will get from finishing the food you bought. In the end you bought this food, not using it would be like throwing money away.

Too good to go:

If you really can’t find anything, are too lazy to carry all of those many groceries bags and still want a nice meal you can help with fighting restaurant food waste. Go to your app store and download it. When you enter in the “too good to go” app, you can add your postcode and in a few minutes you can see all of the fast-food/ bakeries/ supermarkets/ and restaurants that have still food that haven’t been sold. You will have time to pick it up, and the price, this is the best part: not only do you have a super nice bag with so many goodies at a RIDICULOUS LOW price. For example, I got food from whole food for £4. You do not choose your menu but you choose your restaurant and type of food.

Olio:

Olio is my latest find. it helps you share things you do not want anymore or if you cook too much and find yourself having to throw away dishes. Well, with olio you can just upload pictures of what you want to give away and at what time to pick it up. It is a free sharing app which wants to tackle food waste in an easier and friendlier manner. Not only do you feel better about the food given but also connecting with people that care about the same topic and understand the importance of small changes.

Composting:

Being in a big house with a garden or a flat in central London: you can recycle. Nowadays it has been made easy with the help of those small composting boxes. You can even create your own compost box without having to buy something new. Here is an amazing article written by Lucie about composting at home.

Something quite funny was brought to my attention regarding this: when you search for compost in London you can find several companies selling compost for your plants.  Imagine selling your compost.. sounds crazy when you know how easy it is to create one.

Thanksfully, some councils put a scheme in place: community composting. You can compost in your flat and join the community to bring your compost to places where this is needed.
