Ethical Guide to sustainable deodorant: which one should you choose?

Nowadays you can find those new more ethical deodorant everywhere. Why did this become a trend and why deodorant, you are currently using, is impacting your carbon footprint? With this rise in popularity, there is also a rise in the number of brands: which one to choose?

There are different reasons why people want to change from a “normal” deodorant or antiperspirant to a natural one or more eco-friendly one:

  • some concerns are due to the aluminium that exists in the antiperspirants or the parabens existing however after a lot of researches there is no real proof that aluminium nor parabens have an impact on breast cancer.
  • The irritation or rash some deodorant can cause to a sensitive skin.
  • non-reusable packaging leading to more waste

We know that changing deodorant is quite daunting and scary… no one wants to arrive at work smelling bad…

So here is a review of 4 of our less waste and more ethical deodorants

Wild deodorant: the most famous one:

Their website here.

Price: for the subscription is £12 and the one-off purchase (1 case & 3 refill) is £25.

What do we love:

It is a London based company creating refillable deodorant. You buy only one deodorant case and then several refills: this leads to less waste. You even have a subscription to the refills so you can receive them on time and never find yourself without deodorant.

The ingredients are all-natural and the refills have different scent so you can choose between 5. The deodorant is vegan, cruelty-free and free of parabens and aluminium ( the case is in aluminium but the deodorant in itself does not have any.

Get fussy:

Their website here.

I discovered this brand through one of the ads I received on Instagram/ Facebook. I contacted the owners to know. A bit more about their drive to create a product like fussy:

“Globally we throw away 3.2 billion single-use plastic deodorants every year….enough to fill the bellies of 2,780 blue whales! By using fussy not only will you save over 250 of single-use plastic deodorants from ever being manufactured but each deodorant sold directly funds the collection of 1kg of Ocean bound plastic and you can track exactly where that waste is stopped on a digital map.

The entire product is also the first refill to be made entirely from plants. Inside and out. The refills are made from waste sugarcane and once empty will just decompose in your garden or the bin. And the outer container is made from sustainably sourced corn bioplastic. ” Matt Kennedy

This brand launches its Kickstarter campaign on the 6th of October!

Ku.tis

Their website here.

Price: for one deodorant £6.50.

Ku.tris is the easiest to find! Most of the supermarkets today have it on their shelves.

We love the fact that not only do they propose vegan deodorant and their cartoon-like packaging makes it unique.

However even if I love the brand, the packaging is not the best. The deodorant can get quite hard and difficult to apply, the packaging cant get wet or be in a too humid environment.

Salt and stone:

Price: for one deodorant $18

One of the most pricey one. The brand is from LA California.

To be honest they offer a really nice combination of natural ingredient to ensure a perfect stay throughout the day. However, their packaging is not refillable their price is quite high. They offer a subscription concept. Definitely a nice brand but we know they can do more!

DIY

Here is a youtube video for a easy DIY for your deodorant. The zero waste and natural solution!

As expected there is a transition period going from any normal deodorant to a more natural one. However the Wild deodorant is widely loved around its users. For an “average” sweater if this would be a term, the wild deodorant is perfectly adapted.
