Just a better sleep

Just a better sleep

You just woke up and cannot even get out of bed. Your alarm just gave you a heart attack so you snooze it and sleep 9 min more. After a 10 hour night, you wake up feeling like you never went to sleep. It is midday at work and you cannot stop thinking about the moment you will be back in bed. This happened to all of us at least once (let’s be honest a lot more than once) in our lives.

Sleep is a key factor for a good quality of life. The length and the quality are important. Even if the number of resting hours is adjustable to each individual, the importance of a good sleep is the same. Why is sleep so important?

Sleep for your body:

During your sleep, the body repairs muscles, releases hormones for our balance and consolidates memory. This is all done during 4 stages or cycle that lasts 90 min.

An adult should sleep between 7/9 hours, cutting this time short could have an impact on your physical and mental health: lack of concentration, tiredness during the day, laziness, impact on making decisions.

Your body and your brain cannot function properly without your sleep

However, did you know that spending too much time in bed could negatively impact your balance? If you feel the need to sleep more than the hours recommended, it could be due to an underlying condition. Those over hours can lead to obesity, back pain, headache (dizziness) or even heart disease.

Quality of sleep:

Work, taking care of the kids, cleaning the house making sure everything is spotless makes you rely on only 7 hours per night. Because of your frenetic lifestyle, you need that quality sleep!

Here are a few tips to enhance your time in bed:

  • As you know, the more energetic you are, during the day, the more your body needs that sleep and will shut down quicker, so make sure you have your daily sweat;
  • Make sure your room has fresh air during the day. If the air does not circulate in your room, odours, dust and other components will accumulate and have an impact on your health.
  • Try to go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day, even the weekend to ensure your body gets the routine and help you shut down.
  • Optimize your bedroom is a must:
    • Buy yourself an alarm clock and stop using your phone for that or put it on airplane mode. We all know how lovely it is to watch a movie in bed but try books, meditation, journal or even talk to your partner!
    • Do not look at the news before going to sleep as this could impact your stress level or even trigger your bad thoughts.
    • Make sure your mattress and pillow are adapted and support well you back and your head.
    • Buy indoor plants and make sure they are in a good state: no moisture at the roots nor dying.
    • Reduce the temperature by switching down the heater or just opening the door before your sleep. It will help your body to cool down. The best temperature for your sleep should be around 18/19 degrees.
    • Breathe in and Breathe out several times (I recommend at least three times). It will help realise some of the tension of the day.
  • Lavender spray should be your must! This herb has many benefits, one of them being a calming effect. It has not be proven but for my personal experience since I spray my pillow with lavender I am more relaxed calm and fall asleep more quickly. Just make sure you do not ingest it as it can be harmful.

You can find a lot of other tips but those are the one I use and worked for me.

If even after trying some of those tips, you still feel tired during the day or cannot manage to fall asleep at night you need to contact your doctor as this can be due to an underlying health issue.
