Bamboo Pads: The Perfect Zero Waste Bathroom Swap!

Back at the beginning of this year, instead of buying a new bag of cotton pads, I decided to change and buy bamboo pads. There were two mains reason for this choice:

  • Financial:
    • Bamboo pads are about £10 so not so cheap. However, you can reuse them and in general, they are a bit bigger than the cotton ones.
    • Cotton ones cost around £1 for 100. Yes it looks way cheaper but if you think about it you need more than 2 per days. So if you buy every month new pads at the end of the year it costs you more.
  • Ecological:
    • As we saw previously Bamboo is an amazing material. However, used for fabric it is most of the time using quite a lot of chemicals.
    • Cotton, however, is considered as one of the material using not only a lot of water but because of the factories competition and the run for the lowest price, it is using an incredible amount of pesticides and low wages for its worker.

So buying bamboo end up being a more sustainable solution for the environment.

However, after washing them a first time, I used them again and began to see rashes, redness on my face and it was quite itching. I first thought it was the cream and face remover I used so I tried others and still saw those effects came. I bought a new pack of cotton pads and realised I did not get this redness in my face. After researches on the internet, I realised that my rashes came for the products I used to clean the pads.

When you buy new bamboo pads:

  • First, let them soak in water before using them the first time to remove any chemicals that could be attached to the tissue
  • Then after using them clean them using an organic laundry washer or cleanser.
  • Do not dry it in a dryer as this could impact the material and make it rougher to the skin. The best would be to dry it already at the sun.
How to use bamboo pads for the first time and make sure they are reusable. Ecofriendly and sustainable products

It is a process to change to sustainable products and it is okay to take your time and try several times. By making the change slowly and making sure you are being gentle to yourself everything should be alright.
