An ethical bathroom guide: the swaps you can make

I want to begin this article first by saying that you should not buy anything new right now. First finish what you have, then buy new/ better products that would help you create an ethical bathroom.

Why would you want an ethical bathroom? Hygiene products are most of the time coming in non-recyclable packaging and are not plastic-free. The goal for an ethical bathroom is to reduce the amount of plastic and waste. Changing to a more ethical bathroom will also help you save money. In fact, a lot of products seem like an investment at the beginning, however when you calculate the number of single-use products that you use in your daily life you realise that at the end of the year you could have saved quite a bit of money.

The different swaps you can do once you finished your products:

  • Razors: we all have used in our life those single-use/ few use razors. however, several brands propose a new type of razors: reusable razors with interchangeable blades. Go check this article to find out more about those and some of our favourite brands.
  • Shampoo and soap: we are used to buying our shampoo and conditioner in those big plastic bottles. This ends up in fields as most of them are not able to be recycled and are not compostable. Here are some swaps you can do for this:
    • soap, shampoo and conditioner bar. They are getting more and more popular and their natural ingredients make it very attractive to a lot of people.
    • soap powder: this new innovation help not only to reduce plastic but also the amount of water wasted by big companies. How does it work? You receive a small bag filled with powder. You put this powder in a glass bottle of your choice and then add the water needed. Last steps is shaking! Your soap is ready to use in a beautiful reusable glass container.

PS: we love this last new innovation but the soap bar is appearing to use less water!

  • Toothbrush: it is not news that the toothbrush is definitely one of the most plastic used in our bathroom. From the packaging to the number of times you change it per year toothbrush are not environmental friendly. However, now, you can find bamboo toothbrush which are easy to compost or recycle, you just need to take out the pics of the brush part and recycle the bamboo-part.
  • Toothpaste: you can now find a lot of toothpaste in powder in metal small container: this help with waste and plastic as you can reuse the container and not through it away.
  • Cleaning products: as we have seen before about the innovation of powder that can be mixed with water to give soap, some companies use it for cleaning products! Those products are more natural and less harming for the environment.
