What you need to know about KOHR: a sustainable brand.

Interview of a timeless conscious brand – KOHR

As I read you studied fashion but were not so much attracted about the entrepreneurship idea. What exactly made you changed your mind? Why did you decide to go the route of the sustainability?

Whilst you are at uni, especially fashion, there is always unrealistic expectations of the industry. I wanted to be in New York working in a high-end fashion house designing for run ways. When in reality I was sat behind a computer designing the same thing day in day out. There was no creative freedom. So that is where I started getting the itch to start up on my own! I also wanted more from the industry than just the aesthetic so this is where sustainability came in. The more I started researching the more I knew there was a place in the industry for KOHR.

How do you choose the fabrics and where do you find them?

Sourcing is the one thing I take the most time on. It’s so important for me to make sure I know exactly where the fabric has come from all the way down to the raw material! I start by researching the internet and trade shows and then order fabric samples! I’m not going to tell you my suppliers as that’s a huge trade secret, haha! But I will say that my fabrics are from all over the world! Which I am very proud of! Even though I am a UK based brand, I come from a multi-cultural family. So, I always wanted to keep element I my brand, and my Elastic is made in my home country Austria!!

How are you? After this year 2020 the launch must have been different than the one you expected. What are you grateful for?

I’ve been working on this brand since 2019 so launching in a pandemic was never on the cards! And whilst it’s had its difficulties from fabric delays etc. It’s actually been a great year for my business! Everybody is slowing down and taking time to think about their values. Luckily, sustainability and shopping small have been on most people’s minds! So, I’m truly grateful for everything 2020 has given me, it will always hold a place in my heart as this is where KOHR was born!

What was one of your mistakes or regret for this brand?

My brand is a made to order brand. I wanted this business model for many reasons, one as it’s a lower cost to me and two, it’s not sustainable to hold stock! I got given the opportunity to stock on a large platform and I jumped on that opportunity, it was really exciting, still is! But, to do so meant I had to change my business model to hold stock. Whilst it wasn’t a lot of stock the whole process of getting stocked was very rushed. Which doesn’t align with my business model at all! So, I do regret instantly changing who my business is to fit in with the ‘high street’ stockist. But, I have definitely learnt a lot from it. It’s a mistake I won’t make again!

How would you define your brands in three words?

Conscious Alternative Essentials

(That’s my tag line and it speaks my brand so perfectly!)

What is your plan for 2021 and what can we expect from your brand?

KOHR will be going in a slightly different direction in 2021. The brand has moved on so much in my head from the first collection it’s just time to put it into practice. KOHR will be moving into uni-sex clothing so that means a very slight re-brand to attract a different demographic. I’m making this move to be more inclusive in sizing, diversity, and gender. I’m going to share a lot of the development process so I can make a line my customers truly want!

You have been working hard to make sure your clothes are as sustainable and ethical as they can be. But in this world, there will always be people that explains that it is not enough, fabrics should be more ethical, clothes more organic or else. What is your point of view on “extreme activist”?

There is always room for improvement there’s no denying that! But sustainability isn’t manageable when you have to do it perfectly otherwise it’s not worth doing. If 30 people are imperfectly sustainable than 10 people doing it perfectly that is surely better for the environment? Also, there are so many different ways to be sustainable! For one person veganism might be the right path for them and another zero waste. It has to fit into your lifestyle for it to be a practical change!

I absolutely love your brand and I think you are making such an amazing job in wanting to change the fashion industry. I would love to know about your expectation for the fashion industry in the next few years?

Thank you so much!! I would love for people to understand the value in investing into your pieces of clothing! Somehow, we need a huge shift from the fast fashion mindset to appreciating slow fashion for what it brings. Clothing can hold memories, create so many different outfits, be handed down, upcycled etc. and they’re almost shamed for that ability! So, the industry creates, low quality garments that are only meant to last one season, items that only go with one outfit, and the cheapest fabrics! I would love to see more people make the switch from fast fashion to slow fashion.
